Time to Appeal Property Taxes in Colorado Springs?

Your home may be worth less than the local tax assessor believes and that could mean a smaller property tax bill.

It's up to you to appeal your tax bill. An over valued, over assessed property is one of the most common and successful grounds for challenging your tax bill. 

The rule is this: When home prices rise, so do property taxes which are tied to a home's value. On the other hand, when home values fall, so do those same property taxes.

2011 is a reappraisal year for homeowners in Colorado Springs. Filing an appeal can only use sold comparables from the 18-month period specified by the El Paso County Assessor.

$8000 Homebuyers Tax Credit Still Available

$8000 Tax Credit Still Available for those that qualify. The time frame has been extended to the military and certain federal employees. Those that qualify will get a one year extension to buy a home until April 30, 2011 and close by June 30, 2011.

To be eligible you must be:   

  • Members of uniformed services 
  • Members of Foreign Service of the US 
  • Employees of Intelligence Community 
  • Spouse of any of the above 

The same rules that had applied to first time home buyers are still in effect (income limits, sales price of $800,000 or less, Maximum tax credit of $8000 or based on AGI).
